MRI device

The Siemens 3T MRI used by the laboratory for fMRI is located in the imaging unit of the University Hospital of Dijon (Bocage). This MAGNETOM Trio MRI (Tim) is 2m long, and with a 60cm diameter tube diameter. The machine is equipped with bobine gradients of 45mT/m and a trigger pulsing for each volume acquisition (TR).

The MRI is controlled by a software console running Syngo MR B17.

 

 

The antenna

For fMRI sequences, a receiving head antenna of 12 elements and 18 acquisition channels is available. It is equipped with a mirror for viewing stimuli that are displayed on a screen placed behind the tube.

Sequences

The EPI sequence includes:

  • A localizer in 3 directions (for a period of less than one minute)
  • An anatomical T1 (between 5 and 15 minutes depending on the desired resolution and contrast)
  • B0 field maps for the correction of geometric distortions 3T (duration: 5 minutes)
  • EPI time series whose duration depends on the number of repetitions (but also on the paradigm).

The acquisition parameters for the anatomical (T1) and functional images which can be changed are the TR, TE, FOV, the number of excitations and the spatial resolution.

 

 

The stimulus material

PC control 32-bit (Windows 7 Professional) is used to synchronize the signals from the acquisition trigger with sending and retrieving stimuli. It is located at the University Hospital, and controlled by the Matlab and Psychtoolbox software.

We have an MRI-compatible system of visual stimulation (BOLDscreen). It is provided with a 1920x1200 pixel LCD 24'' HD screen (1000cd.m-2) operating at 60Hz, mounted on an aluminum base and powered by a DC power supply. The connections are fiber optique.

We also have a system to recover the response time of the subject positioned within the tube. The system includes a response box of 5 keys, a fiber optic cable connected to a 905 forp interface and a USB cable connected to PC control stimuli.

Image processing

The reconstruction of functional images is performed by the console, just after the fMRI acquisitions. The functional data processing is carried out in our laboratory, mainly with SPM8, and the visualization of processed data is done via MRIcro. Eventually, other software will be used to perform more specific processing (eg for data acquired in rest condition).
