Cognition, Action, and sensorimotor plasticity

The lab adopts a holistic and quantified approach of motor function and its deadaptations/impairments in order to bridge the gap between basic and clinical researches. The project is structured about three complementary axes; outcomes resulting from one theme feed the others. The project matches the neural hierarchy involved in movement control: planification, programming and execution. The experimental approach is also supported by mathematical modeling. This allows prediction of behaviours but also enhances the design of new biomedical applications.

  • We address different physiological and medical topics:
  • how does physical activity influence cerebral plasticity?
  • what corticospinal mechanisms are responsible for sensorimotor plasticity and how do excitation conditions influence these processes?
  • how are movements controlled and adapted in a variable gravito-inertial environment?
  • what adaptive mechanisms build up when a peripheral or central lesion occur? How to objectively assess this adaptation process in order to design targeted therapeutic protocols?

The main outcomes of our project are scientific (improve our understanding of sensorimotor and corticospinal plasticity), methodological (objective assessment of motor function recovery) and therapeutical (evaluate and improve existing therapies and propose novel approaches).
