The social dimension of proximal space

Theoretical approaches in philosophy, psychology and neuroscience converge on a conception of the space that surrounds us and enables us to act, integrating three main functional subspaces: peripersonal space, extrapersonal space and distant space. However, data accumulated over the last few decades give particular importance to peripersonal space as the interface between body and environment for voluntary motor acts directed towards objects. I will present the most recent experimental work enabling a better understanding of the organization and functions of peripersonal space, while discussing its specific role in the regulation of social interactions.
